Bònn Fêt Drapo! Happy Flag Day!
Every May 18th, Haitians around the world pause to celebrate one of the most powerful symbols in history: the Haitian flag. But this isn't just a day to wave colors - it's a day to remember the story behind them.
The story goes that in 1803, at the Congress of Arcahaie, revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines took the French tricolor flag, tore out the white center strip - symbolically removing the white colonizer - and gave the blue and red halves to Catherine Flon, who sewed them back together into a new banner. Some versions of the story say she sewed the pieces together with her own hair.
That flag - blue and red, bound together - has flown over the first free Black republic for over 220 years.
The blue represents the Black population of Haiti. The red represents the mixed-race population. Together: L'union fait la force - unity makes strength. The same motto printed on today's flag is the same one Les Grenadiers will carry into the 2026 World Cup.
We've been making Flag Day apparel since 2018. Our Independence Day collection has pieces that honor the flag, the revolution, and the leaders who made Haiti possible. Pair any of them with the 18K Gold Plated AYITI Necklace and you've got an outfit worthy of the day.
Pote drapo a. Carry the flag.
