His name means "All Saints' Day" - the day he was born into slavery on a Saint-Domingue plantation in 1743. But Toussaint L'Ouverture would grow to become one of the most consequential military and political leaders in world history.
Toussaint was 47 years old when the Haitian Revolution began in 1791. He joined the uprising, quickly distinguished himself as a military genius, and rose to lead what would become the only successful slave revolt in history. He fought not just the French, but also the Spanish and the British - playing empires against each other with extraordinary strategic cunning.
Napoleon Bonaparte, who considered himself the greatest military mind in the world, was forced to send 40,000 troops to stop Toussaint. He called him "the Black Napoleon." The original had him captured through treachery - luring him to a meeting under a false flag of peace and arresting him in 1802.
Toussaint died in a French prison on April 7, 1803 - but his revolution didn't. His generals, Dessalines and Christophe, carried it to completion. On January 1, 1804, Haiti became the first Black republic in the world. Toussaint never saw it, but it was his.
His words from prison: "In overthrowing me, you have done no more than cut down the trunk of the tree of black liberty in Saint-Domingue. It will spring back from the roots, for they are numerous and deep."
Toussaint L'Ouverture is part of our Haitian Leaders collection because we believe his story belongs on our backs, in our conversations, and in our children's education. Fashion is how culture survives.
